Fruit salad is present in almost any potluck or party and while they are very popular, they can be quite boring and tacky too. To put life and style into a tired-old recipe, you can add champagne to fruit salad to make it sparkle. Turn an ordinary dessert into a sophisticated treat that will make an unforgettable end to a dinner party. In this recipe, yellow apples, pear, orange, grapefruit, strawberries, and red and green seedless grapes are seasoned with honey and champagne for a simple yet stylish dish.
This colorful dessert dish from Roger Souvereyns also makes a lovely hors d’oeuvres for cocktail parties. Served in champagne glasses, they make a wonderful presentation and can also be quite refreshing and invigorating, keeping the party going. Don’t worry if not all the fruits are plump and sweet. The honey will complement the fruits and bring out their natural flavors. Even if the apples are tart, they will contrast wonderfully with the sweet honey and will develop a depth of flavor with the touch of champagne.
You can simply garnish the festive fruit salad with lemon wedges or orange wedges. To keep he fruits from discoloring you can toss them first in lemon juice before adding the honey. You can also serve this salad as a starter in lieu of green salad. The champagne acts as the acidic ingredient instead of balsamic vinegar. The honey perfectly complements the champagne and creates a memorable and harmonious dish in color, taste and texture. Alternatively, you can serve the festive fruit salad on a bed of lettuce. If you wish to serve this dish as a dessert, you can top it with whipped cream or yogurt for a nice touch. Top it with sprinkled nuts for flavor and texture. This is the perfect dish for hot summer days and warm evenings.
Cut the apple, pear, orange and grapefruit into bite-size pieces into a small bowl. Add honey and toss gently. Chill for at least 30 minutes.
Spoon fruit into champagne glasses, filling them up halfway. Fill remainder of glasses with chilled champagne.
Dip the edges of the glasses in colored sugar crystals and garnish them with slices of lemons or oranges for a festive touch.
